ACOI 2021 Annual Conference

The ACOI is delighted to announce that our 2021 annual conference will take place as a virtual event on the morning of the 18th November.

The conference theme, ‘From Tiger to Crisis to Recovery & Beyond - the future evolution of Compliance’, will focus on the role of the compliance professional and how the compliance profession is likely to evolve in the years ahead.

Topics to be discussed will include the future digital environment, sustainability, accountability and governance, regulation and the skills that will be required by tomorrow’s compliance professionals.

Ed Sibley, Deputy Governor, Prudential Regulation, Central Bank of Ireland, has confirmed that he will speak at the conference. In his role as Deputy Governor, Mr Sibley is responsible for leading the supervision of credit institutions, insurance firms and the asset management industry.

William Callahan, Director Of Government & Strategic Affairs at the New York based Blockchain Intelligence Group. Bill served over two decades in various law enforcement positions with the Drug Enforcement Authority (DEA) in the US prior to taking up his current role. Bill will share expertise in data privacy and global anti-money laundering (AML), sanctions, policy, and government matters.

Vivienne Arts OBE, is a Non-executive Director of Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation, is Chair of the International Regulatory Strategy Group Data Working Group (irsg.co.uk), and is the Vice Chair on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Kieran Towey, Managing Director, KPMG, will speak to attendees on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. Kieran has over 20 years’ experience working as a Data Scientist, delivering data powered solutions to large global and domestic clients. 

We will also have a panel discussion on the topic of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). We are delighted to have Yvonne Homes, Chief Sustainability Officer in AIB, Laura Wadding, Partner, Regulatory Risk, Deloitte; Ann Shiels, Associate, Asset Management & Investment Funds, A&L Goodbody and Vincent McCarthy, Founder, ESG Ireland partake in this panel discussion. Meet the Speakers:

Ed Sibley, Deputy Governor, Prudential Regulation, Central Bank of Ireland
Ed Sibley was appointed Deputy Governor, Prudential Regulation on 1 September 2017. He is an ex-officio Member of the Central Bank Commission and is also a member of the Supervisory Board of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). As Deputy Governor, Prudential Regulation, Ed is responsible for leading the supervision of credit institutions, insurance firms and the asset management industry.
Prior to this appointment, he was Director of Credit Institutions Supervision, responsible for overseeing the Central Bank's supervisory work for all banks and credit unions operating in Ireland. He joined the Central Bank in 2012 in the Banking Supervision area. Ed has more than 20 years' experience working in the financial services sector. His previous experience includes working for the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) leading the supervision of European banks operating in the UK; and a variety of risk management roles in Bank of Ireland and PwC.
Ed has an MBA from Smurfit Business School, and a first class honours BA Economics degree.

Vivienne Artz OBE
Vivienne is a Non-executive Director of Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF.org), is Chair of the International Regulatory Strategy Group Data Working Group (irsg.co.uk), and is the Vice Chair on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP.org).
Previously, Vivienne was a Managing Director and Chief Privacy Officer at the London Stock Exchange Group, Refinitiv and Thomson Reuters, leading the global Privacy Office and overseeing global privacy strategy and practice. Prior to being a Chief Privacy Officer, Vivienne was a Managing Director and Global Head of Privacy Legal & Head of International for the Intellectual Property and Technology Law Group at Citi. Before moving to Citi in 2000, Vivienne qualified and practised as a solicitor in London, focusing on technology, privacy and commercial practices in three City law firms.
Vivienne is on the Advisory Board of Women in Banking and Finance, having been President and CEO from 2017-2020. Vivienne is also on the Business and Law Advisory Board of St Mary’s University, the Alumni Advisory Board of Pembroke College Oxford University, and is on the Founding Editorial Board for the Journal of AI and Ethics.
Vivienne is a recognized gender champion and leader having been awarded the Champion for Women Award at the Women in Banking and Finance Awards for Achievement 2016. Vivienne was recognised in the 2019 PrivSec200 list of privacy and security professionals across Europe and received the 2019 WeAreTheCity Rising Star Editor’s Choice Award in recognition of her tireless efforts in the diversity space, and as an individual who is pushing for change within her industry. Vivienne placed in the top 20 Executive Women Role Models in the HERoes List 2020, was awarded Woman Solicitor of the Year in the Law Society Excellence Awards in 2020, and has many years of experience leading a broad range of diversity initiatives and groups both within firms and across sectors. Vivienne was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours in 2021 for services to financial services and gender diversity.

William Callahan, Director Of Government & Strategic Affairs at the New York based Blockchain Intelligence Group
William (BIll) J. Callahan III is a law enforcement veteran with 20+ years in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). He retired from the DEA as the Special Agent In Charge for the St. Louis division and held numerous posts in the DEA since joining in early 2000.
Bill specialized in complex, multi-jurisdictional money-laundering investigations. In many of these investigations, illicit actors took advantage of trade-based money laundering schemes, dark web narcotic distribution involving cryptocurrency, and market manipulation to obfuscate the true source of the funds.
While assigned to DEA Headquarters, Bill established DEA’s proactive money laundering audit team, where he took part in the development of creating policy and procedures in furtherance of DEA’s undercover operations involving cryptocurrency.
He was instrumental in leading the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Domestic Highway Enforcement program and worked closely with the New York High Intensity Financial Crime Area program. Bill served as co-chair of the New York External Fraud Committee, an ad-hoc committee consisting of law enforcement and the financial community combating financial crimes and fraud.
In 2021, Bill joined Blockchain Intelligence Group as the Director of Government and Strategic Affairs; he is responsible for developing relationships with law enforcement, regulators, and government agencies globally.

Kieran Towey, Managing Director, KPMG
Kieran has over 20 years’ experience working as a Data Scientist, delivering data powered solutions to large global and domestic clients. Kieran has a mathematics and statistics academic background and excels in building and growing data, analytics and artificial intelligence capability, including specialist teams and technology solutions. Kieran is a Thought Leader in the field of analytics and has travelled the world, working with clients across all industries and speaking at technology, analytics and AI conferences. Kieran’s particular expertise lies in designing and delivering data powered solutions that maximise the client value from investments in data and analytics technology, with particular domain expertise in Financial Services and Public Services.
Kieran was Global Advanced Analytics led for Fraud, Financial Crime and Risk Analytics for global consulting company, leading ~150 specialist Data Scientists and Technologists. Kieran was the lead for the Global Fraud, Financial Crime and Risk & Compliance Analytics Centre of Excellence tasked with utilising data, analytics, artificial intelligence and automation approaches to address these functional areas.

Ann Shiels, Associate, Asset Management & Investment Funds, A&L Goodbody
Ann Shiels is an asset management and investment funds lawyer in practice in Ireland with over 20 years' experience in the European and Irish investment funds sector. Ann has worked with regulated financial services entities on sustainability-related and ESG matters. She has contributed to the Association of Compliance Officer's in Ireland's podcast series "The Compliance Files" on the subject of the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosures Regulation. Ann is active in voluntary industry bodies promoting sustainable practices, co-ordinates an executive level education programme in responsible and sustainable investment and holds a certificate in sustainable finance from University of Cambridge's Institute for Sustainability Leadership.

Laura Wadding, Partner - Regulatory Risk, Deloitte
Laura is a Partner in the Irish firm’s Risk and Regulation team, within the Risk Advisory Department, specialising in Governance, Risk Management, Compliance and Culture in financial services.
Laura began her career in the funds sector more than 20 years ago and has held roles in investor services and compliance in INVESCO, PFPC and BNP Paribas Securities Services. She holds a Degree in Law from the Institute of Technology and a Diploma in Compliance from the Institute of Bankers.
Laura joined the Irishfunds Transfer Agency committee many years ago and has since played an active role in the development of industry initiatives, in particular, the introduction of FATCA, the development of the Investor Money Regulations for fund service providers, the evolving Anti-Money Laundering landscape and the regulatory expectations around Outsourcing.
Laura currently chairs the Irishfunds Operational Steering Group, with responsibility for coordinating the efforts of 8 working groups – AML, Transfer Agency, Regulatory Reporting, Legal, Depository, Financial Reporting, Heads of Operations and Internal Audit.
Since joining Deloitte, Laura has worked with a range of Asset Management and Asset Servicing firms to support them in the delivery of key regulatory projects with a focus on areas such as AML, IMR, MiFID, Outsourcing, CP86. Laura has worked with firms on their Governance & Risk Management submissions to the CBI in support of their Brexit applications and also in response to CBI inspection.
Laura is committed to Irishfunds and its members, and the leading role that Ireland plays in the sector globally. She has the right balance of operational, regulatory and advisory experience to make a valuable impact in a leadership role on council.

Vincent McCarthy, CFA, Founder, ESG Ireland
Vincent started his career as a stockbroker in San Diego in 2005 and has over 15 years of experience advising high net worth individuals, trustee boards, and institutions, working for companies in the United States, Ireland, and Guatemala.
Inspired by his time working in impact investing in Latin America in 2017, Vincent set up CoTerra Impact to be a catalyst for change in how we think about business and investments. He founded ESG Ireland®, an independent platform focused on closing the knowledge gap around the broad theme of ESG and responsible investing. Publications include The ESG Factor Magazine, published quarterly, and The ESG Factor Podcast.
Believing in the need for practical education in this evolving area, Vincent established the Responsible Investment Institute™. Among the first courses launched were the Responsible Investment Advisor (RIA) course and the Responsible Investment Trustee (RIT), supported by Sustainable Finance Skillnet and in partnership with Irish Life. The guiding principle is empowering decision makers to ask the right questions.
Vincent is a CFA Charterholder and a Qualified Financial Advisor. He graduated from the University of Limerick with a Business degree (1.1 Honours), and he holds a Masters in Finance (MSc) from Fairfield University in Connecticut; awarded the Fr. John Conlisk scholarship in 2003.

Yvonne Holmes, Chief Sustainability Officer, AIB
Yvonne Holmes is the Chief Sustainability Officer in AIB and has responsibility for the development and implementation of the Sustainability Strategy across AIB Group. Yvonne is a member of the Chambers Ireland’s Sustainable Business Council and is the Chair of the Sustainable Finance Skillnet. Yvonne’s previous roles include Head of Analytics & Head of Consumer Strategy
