Doing the Right Thing: Ethics in a Global Context

Despite the proliferation of global guidelines for organisations from the UN Global Compact, the Global Reporting Initiative and the increasingly standardised Environmental and Social and Governance reporting, organisations need to be aware of and balance local values and differing ethical viewpoints internationally. One single global ethic has its limitations.

Global codes of conduct, regulation and international treaties all impact on corporate behaviour.

Compliance and living within the rules however do not guarantee ethical practice at either organisational or individual level nor necessarily address longer term planet level concerns such as global warming.

From an ethical perspective, what can we learn from the global response to the covid 19 pandemic to address such concerns?

Join us on Friday, 3rd December as we continue our Doing the Right Thing Series. We are delighted to have Líadain von der Decken, Principal at the Ethics Plan, and Criona Cullen, Fundraising and Development Consultant, for this webinar.

Takeaways: Concepts such as dignity, respect for others, justice and fair play are as important globally as at a local level and have much to guide us in our approach to future crises.

Meet the Speakers:

Líadain von der Decken, Principal at the Ethics Plan
Líadain has worked for blue-chip technology companies in London, Brussels, Munich and Dublin for over 12 years, she became increasingly aware that in the fast-paced and transaction-led corporate world, there was room for more values-led action and ethical consideration both internally and in terms of the company's duty to society. Líadain completed an MA in Ethics and Corporate Responsibility in Dublin City University and gained a deeper understanding of the opportunities businesses have to adapt to a more values-led approach to avoid the risks of unethical issues.
Her research examined the extended supply chain of globally operating organisations and where the ethical responsibility lay along that chain. Focussing on the UN Guiding Principles for multinational organisation, her thesis suggested a politically enlarged form of CSR to tackle the discrepancy between local and global values and the imbalance of power that organisations have in developing countries.
